Winter Solstice

Published on December 21, 2015 under General Topics

Winter-SolsticeWinter solstice is an astronomical phenomenon marking the shortest day and the longest night of the year. In the Northern Hemisphere this is the December solstice and in the Southern Hemisphere this is the June solstice. The December solstice happens at the same instant for all of us, everywhere on Earth. This year the solstice occurs on Tuesday December 22nd at 04:49 GMT. While it more often than not falls on December 21st, the exact time of the solstice varies each year. In the Northern hemisphere the winter solstice is the shortest day of the year, because it is tilted away from the sun, and receives the least amount of sunlight on that day.

However, the earliest sunset does not occur on the solstice, because of the slight discrepancy between ‘solar time’ and the clocks we use. The shortest day of the year often falls on December 21st, but the modern calendar of 365 days a year – with an extra day every four years – does not correspond exactly to the solar year of 365.2422 days. The solstice can happen on December 20, 21, 22 or 23, though December 20 or 23 solstices are rare. The last December 23 solstice was in 1903 and will not happen again until 2303.

For those of us here in America, and on the east coast, this means that the Winter Solstice will occur tonight around 11:49 PM.
So what energy can we expect from this Solstice?

This energy will be modest, unobtrusive, rather quiet or shy, supporting energy, with nothing over the top or gregarious in nature. But it is far from unassuming. Deep in its underbelly there will be this push for perfection and self-criticism. Hesitation on taking big leaps may be in the forefront.

Everything is going to be about the details. Pay close attention to what everyone around you is doing. You may even find yourself getting pickier about your choice of foods, clothes, friends, artwork, etc. Order in your personal environment needs to become very important to you. Watch out for over cautiousness, you may miss a golden opportunity. Don’t give into worrying. Don’t be afraid to fall.

You may be dealing with suspicions that appearances are superficial and masking the “real nitty-gritty”. You’ll find yourself wanting to probe beneath the surface to uncover the deeper, hidden aspects of a matter.

There is a radiating sense of confidence coming from this cold winter birth of life. While everything dies to recycle, there is a strong sense of well-being and optimism that comes with it. What a perfect match for the meaning of Yule/Winter Solstice. Make sure that whatever you do you play by the rules for the next few months. While things may not come back to bite you instantly, the cold hard sting of truth will eventually rear its head.

You may experience an introspective turn of mind. Keep a journal or a record of your dreams and personal experiences during this energy may give you key things to think on in the future.

Key words to keep in mind:

Positives: ambitiousness, businesslike, clear, conscientious, conservative, disciplined, factual, good manners, intelligent, objectiveness, objective, observant, propriety, politeness, realistic, self-sufficiency, serious, strategic, studious, unbiased
